Description of services  

Sexual dysfunctions are very prevalent in both males and females. There are several types of sexual dysfunctions. The New York Center for Human Sexuality at Columbia-University Medical Center offers state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment for all types of male and female sexual dysfunctions. Advanced diagnostic evaluation permits the differentiation between physical and psychological causes utilizing multidisciplinary approach when indicated. There are several treatment programs available at the Center. These programs include non-surgical as well as surgical treatments. The Center is also involved in national and international clinical trials investigational new treatments (for a list of currently available studies see: Active research studies). Qualified patients may choose to enter these new programs. For patients with sexual dysfunction of mixed or psychological causes, sex therapy and counseling are also available by specialists affiliated with the Center. Director of the Center: Dr. Ridwan Shabsigh  

Ridwan Shabsigh, MD is an associate professor of Urology at Columbia University and the director of The New York Center for Human Sexuality at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Urological Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of University Urologists, and is a founding member of the Society for the Study of Impotence. Under his direction, the New York Center for Human Sexuality has been very active in providing clinical services for the diagnosis and treatment of various types of male and female sexual dysfunctions. Dr. Shabsigh is also the recipient of several research grants to conduct studies in erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, Peyronie’s disease, hypogonadism and female sexual dysfunction and has acted as a principal investigator for numerous clinical trials. In 1993 he was the winner of an American Foundation of Urologic Disease young investigator award for urologic research. Under his direction, several basic science research projects are being conducted at the Columbia Urology Research Laboratory . Dr. Shabsigh has published many scientific articles and book chapters and has given numerous lectures and presentations domestically and internationally. He is a widely published author of many articles that have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Urology, Urology, British Journal of Urology and Contemporary Urology. He is the author of a recently-published patient education book on ED: Back to Great Sex, Overcome ED and Reclaim Lost Intimacy Back To Great Sex. Dr. Shabsigh completed his MD studies at Damascus University Medical School in Damascus, Syria, and pursued urology training in . Subsequently, he completed his residency and fellowship training in Baylor College of Medicine’s Department of Urology, Houston, Texas, and became certified by the American Board of Urology ..
